LaVonne Sorensen

LaVonne Sorensen South Beloit, IL LaVonne Sorensen, 79, of South Beloit, IL, died Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Beloit Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 18, 1935 in Belvidere, IL, the daughter of Lenard and Selma (Stalheim) Hanson. She grew up on a farm near Capron, IL, and began her education at a one room schoolhouse near her home. She later transferred to Capron Public Schools until her senior year, when she transferred to Waldorf Academy in Forest City, Iowa. She completed high school at Waldorf, as well as two years of college. She earned a B.S. degree in Business Education and Social Psychology in 1957, at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. Von completed her education when she received a Masters Degree in Business Education from the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater, WI. LaVonne spent her professional career with the Beloit Public Schools, starting with classroom teaching (Business Education) at Beloit High School and eventually becoming the Vocational Career Education Supervisor for Beloit Public Schools. LaVonne participated in several professional and service organizations during her active and influential career. Some of these are: Rock County OIC Mission, Blackhawk Human Resources Association, Wisconsin Education Association, Wisconsin Career Development Association, Future Business Leaders of America, Wisconsin Association for Leadership in Education and Work, and was an advisor of Deca, Greater Beloit Minority Coalition. Ms. Sorensen also was a member of the American Association of University Women, Altrusa, Eagles Club, and Society for Learning Unlimited, and Kabekona Lake Association. LaVonne was baptized and confirmed at Capron Lutheran Church. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Beloit for many years, and most recently became a member of Faith Lutheran Church in South Beloit. She is survived by family members and other significant people in her life: Bob Seaver, Sonya (Robert) Murphy, Cynthia Lee, Juleah Foss, Laurie (Mark) Tolmie, Sue (Ted) Bear, Andrew Ensley, Courtney Ensley, Wendy (Eric) Van der Muse. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lenard and Selma Hanson. Von’s Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014 in the FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1305 Blackhawk Blvd, South Beloit, IL with the Reverend Rick Meier officiating. Friends and family will be received on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service in the church. Inurnment at Long Prairie Cemetery in Capron, IL will take place at a later date.
