Marilyn J. Massa, age 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Beloit, WI on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
Marilyn was born on January 21, 1934 in Freeport, IL to the late Malburn and Hazel (Unzicker) Schlegel, the second of four children. She grew up in Brookfield, IL and graduated from Lyons Township High School. Marilyn began her career working at the Burlington Northern Railroad; followed by working as a bookkeeper, a real estate agent, and a Mary Kay beauty consultant. She also helped her sister’s family with bookkeeping at their auto parts store.
Marilyn grew up in a household where family was very important. Thus, every Sunday her family would travel to Freeport to visit with relatives. Marilyn spent many years living in Colorado, where she became a diehard Broncos fan. She raised West Highland White Terriers, participated in square dancing and traveled extensively in her motorhome. Later in life, she returned to the Beloit area to be closer to her family. Here she traveled with her sister, Janet, visiting much of the country via bus. She was an avid sports fan and looked forward to Sunday Bronco games, but also followed the Chicago Bears, Blackhawks and Cubs.
Marilyn is survived by her sister, Janet Crowley, several nieces and nephews, and other extended family and friends who loved her dearly.
Marilyn was welcomed into heaven by her daughter Cheryl Estua, parents Mac and Hazel, and her brothers, Bob and Jerry.
A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held at First Baptist Church, 617 Public Ave, Beloit, WI, on Monday, September 22, 2025 at 11AM. Visitation will be from 10AM until the time of service at church. Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 2514 Illinois Rt. 26 South, Freeport, IL, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at 1PM.
