Shirley M. Mathewson age 88, of Beloit died Monday, February 19, 2024 at Beloit Senior Living in Beloit. She was born May 8, 1935 to Edgar and Hazel (Simonson) Goldsmith in Jackson County, WI. Shirley graduated from Alma Center High School, class of 1953. Shirley married Raymond Mathewson on January 29, 1955 in Beloit. She was a longtime active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church where she served for many years in the ladies auxiliary and as a Sunday School teacher. Shirley and Ray were dedicated gardeners and enjoyed traveling the U.S during their retirement, including warm winter trips to Florida. Shirley will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor who always enjoyed time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons Jim (ReBecca) Mathewson and David (Laurie) Mathewson; grandchildren Melody, Daniel, Sam, Monica Grace & Michael; step-grandson Jeramie Hartsock, brother Charles Goldsmith, nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Ray, and sisters Rosella Bradford and Marion Anderson.
The family would like to thank the staff at Beloit Senior Living, Beloit Regional Hospice and many special friends and neighbors for the care they provided Shirley.
Shirley’s Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February, 22, 2024 at ST. JOHN'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1000 Bluff Street, Beloit with Pastor Ronald Rather officiating. Friends will be received on Thursday at Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow the service in Baldwin Cemetery.
