Walter S. Cichon age 90 of Beloit, died Monday December 18, 2023 at Beloit Memorial Hospital. He was born February 19, 1933 to the late Walter Cichon and Angeline Sokol in Chicago, IL. Walter graduated from St. Phillips High School, class of 1951. In 1951, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in England as a cook. Walter was a Sergeant when he was honorably discharged in 1953. While playing at a New Year Eves party, Walter met “the love of his life" Rita Klimasz on the dance floor, Walter and Rita were united in marriage on September 24, 1965 in Chicago. She preceded him in death on November 8, 2023. After his military service, Walter worked as a professional trumpet player from 1953 until 1965. He was quite a well-known trumpet player, playing a lot of polka music for various bands around the Chicagoland area. During his playing years, Walter worked as a traffic manager in the Sea Food industry and was the District Manager for Booth Fisheries in Chicago before his retirement in 1985. Walter continued to work part time odd jobs for years to come. He embraced his role as a husband and father. To his children “he was the best dad ever, and he was always available to guide us into adulthood”. In 1971, Walter moved his family out of Chicago and relocated to Palatine, IL. He enjoyed playing cards with his brother Richard and sister-in-law Dorothy. Walter & Rita shared a beautiful marriage of 63 years together and were known for their great polka dancing at many family weddings and events.
They enjoyed traveling with relatives and friends to Lake Delavan, Las Vegas, and Arizona. Later in life they made their home in Beloit, WI. For many years he was the main caretaker for Angie, his elderly mother, and his wife Rita, who recently succumbed to Alzheimer's. He drove a car up to the last year of his life and enjoyed taking Rita out to different events. Walter was an avid Cubs/ Bears fan. Walter will be remembered for being a generous, caring, and devoted family man, including a peacemaker amongst others.
